It was fantastic seeing everyone at Fall Forum and I am excited about the upcoming year. I know I was a bit overwhelmed by all the wonderful information and couldn’t possibly have ingested it all. Here are the cliff notes for our meeting–

 Officers:

President: Lindsey Campbell

Vice-President: Katie M. Walton

Co-Editors: Jaime Claymore and Bob Patrick

Treasurer: Ashley Allgood

CAMWS Rep: Amy Leonard

ACL Rep: Keith Toda

Keith already sent out an email about ACL’s happenings. If you did not get it, the content follows:

For those of you who were not at the GCA meeting at Fall Forum this past weekend, as the GA delegate to the ACL Council Meeting at this summer’s ACL Summer Institute at UNLV, Keith made the following report:

 1) For the 2011-2012 school year, there were 115 GA members in ACL. Dues are $55.00 again for the 2012-2013 year.

 2) In 2012, GA had the 10th highest number of student NLE test takers, with 5,434 participants. Compare this to 1st place New York, with 11,578 participants.

 3) Please consider having your students taking the National Classical Etymology Exam and the National Roman Civilization Exam. Both of these exams are online and are officially sponsored by NJCL

 4) The 2013 ACL Summer Institute will be held in Memphis, TN at the University of Memphis from June 27-29, 2013. Please consider submitting a workshop/paper proposal.

 5) ACL offers numerous academic scholarships for its members which can be used towards professional development. If you are considering attending the ACL Summer Institute for the first time, ACL has a number of scholarships which will pay for your costs. The application deadline is January 15, 2013.

Amy Leonard also gave a report on the happenings of CAMWS for the year.

1. Join CAMWS! We are hoping to double Georgia CAMWS membership this year. It is just $25 for new teachers/members. Go to CAMWS.org to join online, or mail the membership form.

2. CAMWS benefits: translation contest (registration deadline is November!), travel awards, teacher training awards, grants for promotional activities (they almost never empty their coffers and they WANT to!), awards for best promotional activity (they never get many applicants for this!), Kraft Award for Excellence in Secondary Teacher – nominate a colleague: the deadline for nominations is January.

3. The biennial CAMWS-Southern Section meeting is in Tallahassee on Nov. 1-3. Attend! Go! Be there! And it that ain’t enough encouragement – the GCA is sponsoring a panel entitled “The Road to Gaul” featuring six Georgia teachers: Lindsey Campbell, Jaime Claymore, Randy Fields, Amy Leonard, Caroline Miklosovic, and Bob Patrick. Go and support them! Their panel is on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.

4. (forgot to mention this) The 2013 CAMWS annual meeting will be in Iowa City on April 17-20.

Ashley Allgood brought more of the joy of coffee to GCA’s members with a Starbucks giftcard. We look forward to you joining GCA through the ACL/GJCL/GCA online registration.

Jaime Claymore invited members to take advantage of several internet sites:

1. Like GCA on Facebook for news, events, and reminders.

2. Submit news, student work, ideas, and questions to wordpress site via Claymore or Patrick: https://georgiaclassicist.wordpress.com/

Katie Walton expressed her desire for a concrete due date for both SOTY and TOTY awards. Please be sure to nominate your worthy students and colleagues by APRIL 1st. We would like to finalize the SOTY and TOTY before we get to convention. We will most likely use dropbox. The forms for nominations can be found on our website:

Rachel Ash requested more grant applications for both the ETC Grant for the promotion of the Classics in K-8 and the NCLG Book Grant (links below).

I would like to take this time to renew the request that you take time to nominate your students and peers. We have the best educators in the state and we deserve to be honored by GCA as well as FLAG, etc. I am also excited about hearing your ideas for GCA for this year. Please send me your ideas, thoughts, concerns, etc.

We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Lindsey Campbell, GCA President
